Why “Plethora, Etc.”?
I used to blog over at Sixteen Days in Ireland, but that site became about so much more than my trip to Ireland – while I didn’t realize it at the time, I would end up getting the opportunity to travel to many other places, including Germany, the Netherlands, Iceland, and beyond. I needed somewhere else I could blog, not just about travel, but other things that interest me, like baking and DIY projects. In other words, a plethora of things. :)
Do you take all your own pictures?
Yes, I take (almost) all my own photos. I say almost, because there have been a couple times when Jason snapped a picture or two for me and we later forgot who had taken the photo. That happens sometimes when you share a camera.
(Update as of 2017: I occasionally use stock photos for my general travel advice posts, but when it comes to travel posts about specific destinations all photos are entirely my own!)
Where did you learn to take photos like that? Do you have photography training?
Just practice, really, and having an eye for composition. For every great photo, though, there are often 3-4 bad ones that get kicked to the curb during the editing process, so there’s always an element of luck involved, as well. I don’t have any formal photography training and I’ve never taken a class. I would really like to take a photography class at some point, though!
What tools do you use?
- A Canon Digital Rebel T3i.
- For food pictures and non-wide angle shots, the dirt cheap Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens.
- For wide angle shots, especially when traveling and taking pictures of things like rusty shipwrecks, the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is my love.
- For the rare fisheye shot, the Rokinon 8mm F3.5 does the trick.
- Adobe Lightroom for post-processing
- Natural light. No flashes here!
Do you make money off of Amazon purchases through your site?
As of Dec 2016, Plethora, Etc. is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
How else do you make money?
I work as a freelance writer and photographer. However, you’ll notice that I don’t have banner ads or other advertisements on this site. I think they’re annoying and I don’t want that to be the experience people have with my site.
Ooh, ooh, I have a question. Pick me, pick me!
Sure thing! Just hit me up at my contact page or leave a question in the comments below and I’ll incorporate it into my FAQ.
